Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is seeking a Scientific Director for the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD), one of CIHR’s 13 health research Institutes.

Scientific Directors (SDs) of CIHR Institutes are leaders in their respective fields who champion and support health research, knowledge mobilization, and capacity development at the highest level of scientific excellence. As key representatives of CIHR, they provide scientific leadership and advice, shaping CIHR’s health research priorities and investment strategies with the goal of improving the health of people in Canada and around the world. This role provides an unparalleled opportunity to mentor and train the next generation of health researchers, advocate for researchers, people with lived experience and other partner communities and give back to the health research ecosystem.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one SD position for a four-year term, beginning January 1, 2026. There is the possibility of re-appointment for a subsequent four-year term, with a maximum mandate length of eight years in total.

The mandate of CIHR-INMD is to support research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion, and metabolism; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney, and liver function. The INMD vision is Catalyzing world-leading research that promotes optimal and equitable nutrition and metabolic health outcomes for Canadians.

INMD consults, collaborates and forms partnerships with organizations in or outside Canada that have an interest in issues pertaining to INMD-relevant health research. Partnerships are important to the realization of INMD’s mandate, providing INMD and its partners with the opportunity to leverage, amplify, and collectively achieve actions and impacts for mutual benefit and interest to the health of Canadians.

Together with other CIHR institutes and partners, CIHR-INMD contributes to CIHR’s overall mandate by co-creating strategic funding opportunities and developing related activities that address important health challenges within the diverse CIHR-INMD mandate areas.

CIHR-INMD also mobilizes new knowledge by creating opportunities for researchers to share research evidence with partners, contributes to strengthening Indigenous health research, and fostering EDI.  In addition, CIHR-INMD provides training and capacity-development opportunities for the INMD-research communities.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the CIHR President, and working with CIHR's executive team, staff, and other partners, the Scientific Director of CIHR-INMD will provide overall executive direction and scientific leadership for the Institute.
